Frequently Asked Questions

What are collagen stimulation treatments?

Collagen stimulating filler, also known as bio-stimulators, contains an injectable substance called poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). Collagen stimulating fillers produce a very natural and subtle result by rejuvenating and adding volume to the face though collagen production. Once it is injected, the microparticles inside the filler are absorbed by the body and over time stimulate your cells to produce new collagen.

There are a number of factors that contribute to the ageing process, in particular the loss of collagen. We begin to lose collagen from the age of 25, and once this process begins, we start to see signs of ageing. This can include volume loss, loss of skin elasticity, contour changes, sagging and facial wrinkles.

How they work?

PLLA is injected around the perimeter of the face (temples, cheeks, jawline) and stimulates collagen production through a process called neocollagenisis. The results of this treatment are gradual, and start to appear around 9 weeks post injection, then collagen production and tightening of the skin continues for 6-12 months. This means that the results are extremely subtle as it starts working overtime, unlike normal hyaluronic acid (HA) filler when the gel is injected you see an immediate change. This means this treatment is perfect for those looking to achieve natural, subtle results. Collagen stimulating filler is best suited to patients over 35 who want gradual results.

How often do I need this treatment?

A second, and sometimes a third treatment is recommended at 4-6 week intervals, then every 12-18 months as maintenance.

Common side effects may include:

  1. Swelling: Some degree of swelling is common. This swelling is usually temporary and typically subsides within a few days.
  2. Redness: Redness at the injection sites may occur. This is also usually temporary and should resolve on its own within a few days.
  3. Bruising: Bruising can occur at the injection sites. While not everyone experiences bruising, it is a possible side effect. Bruising typically fades over time.
  4. Tenderness: The treated areas may feel tender or slightly sore to the touch. This discomfort is usually mild and temporary.

  5. Lumps or Bumps: In some cases, small lumps or bumps may develop at the injection sites. These typically soften and disappear as the product integrates with the skin.
